Just when we thought that Fifty Shades of Grey had marked its territory, along comes another contender.
But unlike all the erotic tales that have sprung from the popularity of the former, this one is a force to be reckoned with. Welcome the S.E.C.R.E.T.
L. Marie Adeline, the pseudonym of Canadian author Lisa Gabriele has launched a novel that that literary audiences will inevitably see as a ‘reply’ to the recent erotica that consumed so many. It is always tempting to direct male partners towards such novels under the guise of “but this is how you will really learn about women” - many are guilty of trying this with Sex and the City but even me, an avid ‘encourager’ has to admit, this novel is completely aimed at females.
It is only a woman who will succumb to this heart-warming story of a suffering person of our gender, who ends up with both sexual liberation and true love.
Lucky character. Let’s find out who she is.
Cassie Robichoud is an “accidental celibate”. She may only be 35 years old but she has already suffered at the hands of her abusive late husband and now leads a lonely life – a young widow living in a one bedroom apartment. Part of this young waitress’s daily routine is to stop over at the Cafe Rose after work before returning home. However, this boring routine is somewhat made more interesting when on one her visits, she finds a notebook at the Cafe and decides to read it.
The notebook changes Cassie’s life forever as she is both shocked and fascinated by its sexually explicit content. Her captivation with the content and discovery of its author leads her to a S.E.C.R.E.T underground society that is dedicated to helping women fulfil their sexual fantasies. With such an opportunity in front of her Cassie cannot resist and embarks on a journey that leads her to sexual fulfilment and true love.
When the author showcased S.E.C.R.E.T at the prestigious Frankfurt Book Fair, it caused quite a stir partly because of its racy content, partly because of its intriguing storyline, and partly because of the anonymity of the author. The novelty didn’t wear out though, a very good sign and there are already rumours that this story will be showing up on our screens.
Lisa Gabriele was in New Orleans last October when a psychic told her, her life was about to change. She had no inkling how soon change would come.
Unlike many books of this genre this novel boasts a great writing style and a clever concept which is not too far away from reality, but far away enough to provide readers with escapism. Written in two parts – so far – there is quite a buzz surrounding S.E.C.R.E.T and I have a feeling it will very quickly betray its name and become very, very popular.
This latest style of female sexual liberation has certainly rocked the world but these authors are not the first of their kind. They have however transported their stories into a glossier format. If such novels are so popular, in a day and age where males and females alike have immense amounts of sexual freedom it begs the question, is society simply glossier than before but just as repressed?
